POMPEI: VISIT OF POPE LEO XIV, AI-DRIVEN ARCHAEOLOGY, AND RADICAL INCLUSIVITY PROJECTS
(POMPEI – ITALY) MAY 4 2026 – The Pompeii Archaeological Park and the modern city are preparing to face May 2026 as a global benchmark for faith, cutting-edge archaeology, and social innovation. The main events scheduled for this week highlight a unique convergence between ancient heritage and future-oriented technology.

Papal Visit and Spiritual Anniversary

On May 8, Pope Leo XIV will conduct a historic pastoral visit to the Shrine of the Blessed Virgin of the Rosary. The visit marks the first anniversary of his pontificate and coincides with the "Supplica," a traditional prayer assembly that draws thousands of pilgrims from around the world.

The Pontiff will celebrate Holy Mass in Piazza Bartolo Longo at 10:30 CET, followed by the recitation of the midday prayer. This will be his first visit to the Shrine since his election.

Artificial Intelligence in Archaeology

The Archaeological Park has presented a revolutionary digital reconstruction of the 79 AD eruption. Using proprietary AI algorithms and digital forensic imaging, researchers have recreated the final escape attempts of two victims discovered in recent excavations.

The AI model analyzes environmental obstacles and skeletal biomechanics to simulate realistic escape routes, providing a tool for both academic research and immersive public education.

Global Leadership in Accessible Tourism

A new permanent exhibition dedicated to the plaster casts of the victims has been officially inaugurated at the Palestra Grande, setting a new international standard for museum inclusivity.

This "barrier-free" project includes sign language video guides, 3D tactile replicas for the visually impaired, and Braille documentation. The initiative aims to make the tragic history of the Vesuvius eruption accessible to people of all sensory abilities.

Cultural Initiatives: "Sogno di Volare" (Dream of Flying)

On May 5, the "Sogno di Volare" project will launch its 2026 season at the Auditorium Pompeii. Under the direction of Gabriel Zuchtriegel, the initiative involves local youth in contemporary reinterpretations of classical theater.

For the current year, the program has evolved into a festival format, introducing contemporary dance performances integrated into the archaeological context for the first time.
