Project Alba: Madagascar Embraces Italy as First Five Students Join Local Families for Advanced Studies at Unimore
REGGIO EMILIA Italy FARAFANGANA  Madagascar – May 4, 2026 – The cultural and solidarity bridge between South-Eastern Madagascar and Italy’s Emilia region reaches a historic milestone. Project Alba, an ambitious educational initiative, has officially transitioned from vision to reality: five talented Malagasy students will arrive in Italy to begin specialized academic paths at the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia (Unimore). Five students have already arrived in Reggio Emilia in the past.

The departure was marked by a deeply moving ceremony in Madagascar following the diocesan celebration of Blessed Lucien Botovasoa. Before the entire community, the students received a solemn blessing from the Bishop, who entrusted them with a mission far beyond their textbooks: to serve as ambassadors of their homeland.

A Vision for Future Leadership Don Luca Fornaciari, a missionary from the Diocese of Reggio Emilia-Guastalla and the driving force behind Project Alba in Madagascar, emphasized the human value of the mission:

"These young people are the tangible sign of a future for Madagascar. Project Alba was born to provide them with the professional tools to return home and become the leaders of tomorrow—serving their people with excellence and love. Growing in competence without losing humility is their true calling."

The "Emilian Model" of Hospitality In a unique departure from traditional international student housing, the five students are already integrated into the local community, living with families in Reggio Emilia and Modena. This choice is the heart of the project’s success.

"Hospitality within the family is the key," explains Don Luca. "It allows for a true encounter where diversity becomes daily richness. Emilian families have not just opened their doors, but their hearts, fostering a sense of universal fraternity."

Academic Excellence for Territorial Development At Unimore, the students will focus on strategic specializations designed to address the specific development needs of South-Eastern Madagascar. By combining high-level Italian academic rigor with the lived experience of shared family life, the project transforms international cooperation into a lifelong bond between two distant lands.

Project Alba continues to prove that meaningful international cooperation is not merely about financial aid, but about investing in people. As these five students begin their journey in Italy, Madagascar looks forward to the return of its future professionals, supported by the generosity and vision of the Emilian community.

Project Alba is a collaborative initiative between the Diocese of Reggio Emilia-Guastalla and Malagasy institutions, aimed at empowering youth through education, specialized training, and international cultural exchange to foster sustainable development in Madagascar.
